Tracking
Workshop
Tracking is, or may be quickly becoming, a lost art. But dog-gone-it-all, it’s a darn nice way to spend the day out doing something that comes natural to your dog.
The Tracking Workshop is a one day event and is limited to 8 people and dogs.
Covered will be:
Getting started (area searching for familiar scents);
Scent association (attaching that familiar scent to a “face”);
Article discrimination (learning what belongs to whom);
Straight line tracking;
Using planted distractions to increase concentration on the track;
Tracking into the wind;
Introducing the harness;
Tracking across wind and downwind;
Tracking that first turn; and
Scouting for tracks.
There is some prerequisite training required; the dog must be Koehler trained to retrieve. So, if you are contemplating coming to a Tracking workshop, make sure you and the dog are ready. Obviously any Koehler trained Open dog is suitable; but if you’ve only done the novice work, you are going to need to further prepare the dog. Get a copy of the Open book (available from the bookstore ) and work the retrieving section in its entirety. Starting with a responsible novice trained dog, it takes about 8 weeks to get the retrieving work done for our purpose, but more is better.
